Vodafone Huawei Ascend Mate coming soon with 4,050mAh battery

The Huawei Ascend Mate is headed to the UK and the 6.1-inch giant will soon be up for grabs through Vodafone. The Huawei smartphone had been unveiled at the CES this year, showing off its large screen which had drawn much attention then.

However, we cannot really count that as the gadget’s high point any more, considering the presence of devices like the Sony Xperia Z Ultra and Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 in the market. But a massive 4,050mAh battery which the phone packs is what should give it an edge over its rivals. This is exactly what James Powell, the company’s product director, has emphasized on when speaking about the handset. Commenting on the significance of a power pack in a device, he said that the manufacturer has conjured its own patented technologies for battery optimization called Quick Power Control and Automated Discontinuous Reception.

Powell went on to add that this should sanction an increased battery life by up to 30 percent as compared to any conventional smartphone. What remains to be seen is whether the OEM’s very own 1.5GHz quad core Hi-Silicon K3V2 processor found in the Huawei Ascend Mate, will be able to survive in the reign of Qualcomm and Nvidia chipsets.

Vodafone hasn’t given out specifics regarding the price and availability information of the Ascend Mate as of now. The smartphone’s unlocked variant is out on Expansys at £344.99 and Amazon at £359.99. Seen below is a list of the smartphone’s core specifications:

- Screen: 6.1-inch IPS LCD touch
- Resolution: 1280 x 720 pixels
- OS: Android 4.1
- Processor: 1.5GHz quad core Hi-Silicon K3V2
- Main camera: 8MP with autofocus
- Secondary webcam: 1MP HD
- Memory: 8GB internal, expandable up to 64GB and 2GB of RAM

Vertu TI now available in red or blue limited editions, only 1,000 of each made.

read more in comment :
It's been almost half a year
since Vertu launched its first-
ever Android phone, the TI , and
now the company's decided to
throw in a couple of limited

editions to lure the big
spenders. As pictured above, the
new Vertu TI Colours collection
is wrapped in either "Sunset
Red" or "Midnight Blue" calf
leather, and only 1,000 units are
made for each color. As per
typical Vertu style, there's a
unique number etched on the
back to indicate which of the
1,000 units yours is.
The rest of this hand-crafted,
matt grey titanium phone
remains unchanged otherwise,
namely its 3.7-inch tough
sapphire screen, Android 4.0,
1.7GHz dual-core Snapdragon
S4, 64GB storage plus an 8-
megapixel camera. And of
course, the phone still comes
with the famed Vertu Concierge,
a "100 percent independent"
service that CEO Perry Oosting is
very proud of. To join this
exclusive club, you'll have to
somehow fork out a whopping
HK$90,000 or €8,900 (about US
$11,700) -- just a tad more
expensive than the TI Titanium
Pure Black edition, but also
more flamboyant. This author
already spotted these new
phones at Vertu's Hong Kong
Airport store, and he's currently
accepting donations.

Android “Fairphone” looks to give power back to customers

The “Fairphone,” a phone that purports to approach smartphone design in the most ethical way possible from every conceivable angle, opened for preorders last Friday. The phone uses only conflict-free resources wherever possible, it has an open design, and it is marketed in a transparent way to customers.

The way many gadgets are made—smartphones and tablets especially—has been called into question by several investigations into supply chains and sources, in particular those of Apple and its Foxconn factories. According to a New York Times report last year, suppliers put out phones hand-assembled by allegedly underage, often underpaid workers operating in unsafe conditions.

The company making the Fairphone purports to be ultra-transparent about its material sourcing and manufacturing process, getting conflict-free materials wherever possible and highlighting unfair practices with a view toward changing them. The phone will feature a Mediatek 6589 quad-core CPU, 4.3-inch qHD display, 8-megapixel camera, 16GB storage, dual-band SIM (GSM850/900/1800/1900MHZ, WCDMA 900/2100MHz), user-replaceable battery, and microSD card slot. It will run Android 4.2 Jelly Bean with a “special interface developed by Kwame Corporation,” which the company notes is “also open.”

While we are a bit skeptical that a small company looking to assemble and ship 5,000 phones will be able to have much impact on the gargantuan gadget supply chains in place, the desire to give users as much control over hardware and software as possible is something to be welcomed. The phone will initially be available only in Europe, priced at a flat €325 ($418). Production will begin once 5,000 preorders are in place, with shipments to begin in the fall.
